Labor Day 2017

We had a nice Labor Day. We just took the kids to the beach and chilled out. Kids wanted hot dogs for dinner. Simple and fun day.

Clou Cookout 2016

We had a cookout. Everyone that came was super awesome. They also brought lots of goodies. They chatted, they mingled, some of them played games in the backyard. I got too tipsy to take enough pictures. Rob, Erika, Nick, and Emily also partied especially hard. Thank you all for being the best!

Labor Day Weekend 2015

The weekend began with a wonderful errand. I have lost all the baby weight (all of it- even James) and we live in a beach town now, so I had to buy new bathing suits! I didn't dread it like I did as a teen- and in fact because it was the end of the season there were deep discounts on the leftover expensive brand bathing suits. This is a triple win!: 1) weight loss, 2) beach town, 3) $17 CK bathing suit.

Then we did some serious patio dining set shopping. We waited until the bitter end because we're cheap and proud. We found a pretty basic set for like half of all the cheapest sets everywhere else. Let's hope it lasts. Up next, serious playground time for the kids as a thank you for tolerating our boring bourgeoisie shopping. Followed by copious amounts of Chinese food, and then out again for ice cream! Living. the. dream.

Got the chance to feed herself a little- the only way she likes it.

Sunday we were off to the beach again. It was James's third visit to the beach and Miranda's second, and you could tell they were much more comfortable in the water. Miranda is a little fish, and makes Kevin hold her horizontally so she can sort of pretend to swim and splash. (She doesn't talk but she runs this place with gestures and screams.) Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of that because I was in the water too. James would venture in waist deep but was more interested in picking up rocks and throwing them in the ocean than on swimming. Next year he's taking a real swim class but this year they're over for the summer.

Then we had the traditional grill out planned. Unfortunately I got hit with my second severe dehydration-attack of the month. I sipped water all day but it was no match for the beach + chasing kids. I have vowed to be more careful and consume lots of water! But still a great Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day Weekend with Grandma 2014

While Kevin was at writer's camp, Grandma Kathy came to help me for the long weekend. We spent a lot of bonding time together. We took the kids to the park, fed them, put them to bed. We drank a little bit of wine. We might have watched a soap opera or two. Haha. Good times. Thanks for helping Grandma!

Brady Visits for Labor Day Weekend 2013

Labor Day weekend, Brady visited. We initially had some cookout plans we couldn't see through because I had to get work done, but I was able to hang out Saturday night a bit. We spent most of that time debating the subtleties of a potential Syrian attack. Seriously. Sunday the boys went to Brooklyn to visit Jon and Ben who were alone for the weekend without Becky. James even got to play skeeball for that first time! Reports are that he was pretty bad at it but also extremely proud of himself.

Labor Day in Manhattan 2012

Even though Michele's birthday picnic was an afternoon activity, it took all of Sunday for my sleep-deprived family to recover.  When we all do something together, we all rest less. On Labor Day Monday, we got ambitious again. Even though James has been to lots of different cities because of our Southern roadtrip this spring, and our Northern roadtrip over the summer, and even though James had been to Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx (for the zoo) -- it seemed wrong that he had never been to Manhattan before. So off we went!

Family photo in Times Square

I wanted a photo in Times Square, because, to me, it's the most "New York" spot even though it's filled with tourists. Let's face it though, the tourists are the nicest people in the city. And I needed them to take our family photo. The one of James yanking my hair out while I hold my smile (the photo reigns supreme!) is my favorite. I also thought James might like Times Square because he's obsessed with lights. There was also a life-size Dora, Diego, and Elmo walking around that he was less excited about. Who knows?

Then we took James to Central Park's big Castle Playground because in general he prefers parks and playgrounds to sightseeing. He loved it, but wow, New York is for real. There were little hipster toddlers on scooters going up and down the hills in the park like they were Shaun White. They had helmets; James did not. It was intense. Eventually, James found his way out of the playground and decided to jam out to some musicians playing jazz and Lady Gaga tunes. He swayed and stomped to the beat. It was ten million times cuter than it sounds.

Monday was also James's first time on a train! We took the LIRR into Manhattan, and James was super psyched to watch the trains go by, look out the window, grab at our tickets, and point out all the street lights in Queens. As such, he was very good on the way into the city, but he was tired and not so good on the way home. We might give him a little break before we try that again.
