Bronx Zoo 2015

It seems crazy that it's been 3 years since we went to the Bronx Zoo. On Wednesdays it's free! (If you go another day of the week it's pretty pricey, but you can get 10% off by buying online.) You can park on the street for free if you find a space along Southern Boulevard, but I wouldn't recommend actively trying to do that because all the Bronx Zoo signs lead you to the parking lot, and it is easier to fly out of a black hole than to find a free spot after you've seen the parking lot. (Alternatively, next time, I might try the subway #2 train to Pelham Parkway then go west to the Bronx River -Gate B.)

In any case, we made it! And we saw animals!

Predictably the duck pond was their favorite thing. We could just have taken them to a duck pond.

Oh look! Ducks! Let's stay in this one spot all day then!

Oh but this IS cute.

The following conversation happened after the ducks:
Me: "The tiger exhibit was kind of disappointing."
Kevin: "You're only saying that because there were no tigers."

I don't think these fish are an exhibit, I think they're tiger food.

Bronx Zoo 2012

We had a big exciting playdate at the Bronx Zoo with Rachel and Tim's and Christina and Dan's families. With 6 adults for 4 children, you would think the adults had the upper hand, but we did not.  For one thing, those 4 children were all under 4 years old.

The youngest two, Hudson and James, started their power plays early in the morning before even departing for the zoo. I think James woke up at 5 a.m. so his entire sleep-nap schedule was thrown off, as were our carefully orchestrated plans to have him nap on the way to the zoo.  He was furiously angry to be restrained in a stroller probably because he was grumpy from the sleep problems.  The moment we let him out of the stroller, he wiped out headfirst on some gravel. I'm not sure what shenanigans Hudson pulled, but he arrived fashionably-late, post-James wipe out. It's probably good that he not learn bad behavior from James.

The next oldest, Eleanor, was pretty good.  So that makes one. As the oldest at 3-years-old-almost-4, Isaac played a really fun game all day that we called, "Where is Isaac?" Dan almost always won the game. We all agree that Dan is going to do really well with 2 children one day.

Despite his morning protest, Hudson was his usual super awesome quiet self.  He wasn't terribly interested in the animals, but he was pleased to chill in his stroller and casually enjoy his formula. He is the best baby I've ever seen.

And bears, oh my!

James didn't give up his anti-stroller protest the entire time we were there, so we set him free in the indoor bird exhibit. You would think that at that point he would get as far as possible from his stroller, but no, all he wanted to do was push his stroller around, as well as any other stroller he happened upon.

I was pretty happy because I managed to take hundreds of photos in under 4 hours. I was especially pleased when I asked a stranger to take a group photo of us, and I forgot and left my camera on manual, but the stranger must have been a professional because he took a perfect picture of our group.  Too bad the bear photo-bombed us.

Diary of an Angry Pink Baby #4: Bronx Zoo 2011

Along with several packs of small schoolchildren and a surprisingly robust collection of Orthodox Jewish families, we went to the Bronx Zoo on Monday. Like all six-month babies who don't understand what hands are, let alone animals, James was desperate to go to the zoo. Considering his sterling history of going places, we were eager to oblige.

It costs $13 to park at the zoo. That made me an angry pink baby. James was actually pretty good, by which I mean asleep, when we arrived.

The first animals we saw were giraffes. James spends many hours a day salivating on a rubber giraffe that is indistinguishable from a dog toy, so we figured he'd be excited by the real thing. He was not. Nevertheless, I took him out of his stroller, so his mother could take thousands of photographs of him in front of the giraffes.

Next we saw okapi. If a zebra mated with a not particularly potent horse, their spawn might look like an okapi. We saw elephants, which had the tired look that elephants that don't live in Africa or India or whatever have, and we saw a bunch of animals that looked like monkeys, though they all had crazy non-monkey names. James cared about none of these animals, and my wife photographed all of them.

James would occasionally smile or get excited, but this never had anything to do with animals. Mostly, this had to do with Latin women, whom James enjoyed flirting with a great deal.

My favorite animals were the gorillas. You could get very close to them, and they would do wise and noble things, such as stare at grass and then eat it. I also enjoyed the polar bear that slept the entire time. Out of solidarity, or because he's a baby, James slept in front of the polar bear. The regular brown bear seemed nervous. It kept pacing around the rock like it had placed a bet it already regretted.

There's a monorail at the zoo! I didn't see that coming. It takes you on a totally random tour, featuring buffalo (or animals that look like buffalo), red pandas, and an extremely scary tiger. James loved the monorail because we let him eat a map the entire time. Probably, this was his favorite part of the zoo.

Ericka's favorite part was the photo booth, as she'd left her camera at home, and this gave her an opportunity to commemorate the day. What's that? She brought her camera and took over 200 photos? Ericka's favorite part was the photo booth because she has a deep and incurable addiction. Thanks for the tickets, Teresa!

Teresa and John's Wedding 2011

Kosmidis Wedding 2011
Teresa and John during their first dance

Saturday we went to the first wedding we've been able to attend since James was born. My friend Teresa married her boyfriend of many years at the Bronx Zoo. Teresa wore one of the most spectacular wedding dresses I have ever seen at a wedding I've attended.  It was both attractive to her form, and artistically exciting.  My theory on wedding dresses is that it should first of all make the bride look good (obviously), but the second most important thing is that it not be a dress you could get away with wearing to a fancy cocktail party because you could wear that dress some other time.  Your wedding is your chance to bring it, and Teresa definitely brought it.

The Bronx Zoo was also a really cool venue.  The ceremony took place outside in a beautiful garden, and then cocktail hour was inside the Lemur house, Madagascar exhibit. The reception hall was beautifully decorated with flowers and clear vases that gave the illusion of jungle vines, and each table was named for a zoo animal. Congratulations on a beautiful wedding day and on your new marriage, Teresa and John!

P.S. My friends Rachel and Tim graciously babysat 1-month-old James, whom they knew from the blog to be a little terror. Just to make me seem silly though he behaved really well for them. Maybe James is just a very polite baby in public, and saves his bad behavior for his private life? James had a great time snacking and sleeping and apparently playing catch with Rachel and Tim's son Isaac. I think their version of catch involves Isaac throwing a ball at James's face, and Tim diving to save James's face from impact. James will be playing baseball in no time at all.
