A Year Ago in 2011!
Jamie and Emily got married in Rhode Island. James celebrated his first Fourth of July. I survived Kevin returning to work while I stayed home alone with baby James. We had lots of visits with friends, and Nick C. and Michelle met James. We went back to the Cape for James's second visit and James's first dip in the water. James turned 3 months old, got better at grabbing things, and rolled onto his side from his back.

We spent the fourth of July on the Cape with Kevin's mom. She spent the fireworks show hugging someone's baby and throwing us looks indicating that we should make her a grandmother already. We were trying to coordinate the trip with my parents but they wanted to go a different weekend, and we never went to the Cape together again. Josh and Anna got engaged. My grandmother Daisy turned 80. Kevin and I went to Michigan to visit Sarah and Donald and to see Kevin's old stomping grounds.
My dad turned 61 on Friday, July 16th. The next Monday evening, when I was still at work late, I got a call from my mother, crying because my dad had just been diagnosed with a tumor in his brain. I was at the hospital the next day when the doctor told us it was kidney cancer in his brain, lungs, and his one kidney. It was an awful time in my life, so why am I writing about it again? This is what's with me all the time; writing about it isn't a reminder to me. Last year, his birthday in July was even harder for me than Father's Day or the anniversary of his death. I remember calling him on his birthday and I remember how depressed he was to be turning 61. I also remember how much he wanted to turn 62 when he was diagnosed just a few days later. Now I hate it when people complain about their birthday or their age-- they are so lucky.

Kevin and I had been hoping to get pregnant, but when my dad got sick we figured it wasn't going to happen after all this month. The morning after I returned from the first hospital visit, I got so dizzy I almost passed out. I figured it was the stress of the event, but now I think it could have been an early pregnancy symptom. By end of the month, I knew I was pregnant with our baby whom we would name after my dad James.
We planned a trip to visit my friends Allison and Dan a while before we knew about my dad's cancer, and my parents didn't want us visiting them every single weekend, nor had my dad's treatments started, so we decided to keep our date in Boston. Afterwards, we swung by to visit our friends Casey and Victoria and their daughter Laurel.

Kevin and I were newlyweds and living in Brooklyn, but we celebrated the Fourth of July at Jaime's place in Arlington, Virginia with a fun mix of friends. I missed my dad's 60th birthday when our friends Wendy and Clark had a somewhat impromptu wedding on the same day. Aubree and Patrick got engaged.

I started this blog. Kevin started writing Things My Wife Complains About (TMWCA). The first one was, Her Coffee Being Too Heavy and the second one was Allowing Her to Nap.

Kevin and I were engaged and living together in Charlottesville while I studied for the New York Bar Exam. I was not tons of fun to live with as the test date got closer and closer. We celebrated the Fourth of July with Nick and Emily, Briggs, Roger, and James W. There was a brief trip to New York to check out the new apartment for August. We took some engagement photos on UVA Grounds and on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall. I left for Albany to take the bar, and Kevin moved all our stuff to New York by himself. (Thanks!)

Kevin and I were in the New York area so I could summer at a law firm. We first moved in together for the summer in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I spent the Fourth of July in watching the hotdog-eating contest in Coney Island with Brian and Katy. I took a Bollywood dance class, and I was awful. Kevin and I went to Cape Cod for the first time, and we spent part of the weekend with Jon and Becky. Jaime G. came to visit me in New York at the beginning of the month, and then Brooke, and later Ash, came to visit at the end of the month. Kevin and I celebrated our 1-year anniversary of dating, at a nice restaurant in New York, One If By Land. The same night, Audra and Rob got engaged.

Kevin and I met for the first time at a coffee shop in Charlottesville. He was teaching at Bridgewater College and living with Brady, and I was going to law school at UVA.

Cate and Matt got married in New York on 4th of July weekend. I had a going-away party in DC before I moved to Charlottesville for law school, and life changed completely.

I was 18 when I lost my maternal grandfather, Felix Nicolas. I called him "Pipo." He took care of me a lot when I was little. He had been living in Miami, and my family didn't have a funeral so I wasn't able to say goodbye.

I went to Disney World with my parents the last week of June into the first week of July. My dad was 42-almost-43, my mom was 35, and I was a little 13 year-old.

This was also the last year that the Summer Olympics were held in the same year as the Winter Olympics. It was the first post-Cold War Olympics year.
